Sevee & Maher Engineers (SME) has prepared engineering designs for numerous projects where it is more practical to allow the flood waters to come into the addition, rather than constructing a huge compensatory storage area on the site. This is very common on additions that will not have a basement on small lots that do not have a large area for compensatory storage. The required amount of compensatory storage goes way down because the only fill is the thickness of the perimeter foundation walls. Many times, 100% of the compensatory storage can be placed in the crawl space itself, causing minimal disturbance to the remainder of the yard.
